Good service, not quick but enthusiastic. Food could be compared to that of taco bell:warm and fake Two enchiladas and crawfish dip, lets get started: the crawfish dip had red in it but my fiancée told me "I THOUGHT I put crawfish in my mouth until I put WHATEVER it was in my mouth" it had red but tasted soley of cheese and beans. The enchiladas were bland but filling. Rice and beans were dry. But practical, cheap, good salsa and coffee. Will go again to try something else, second chances and all that.

Much better than the typical Mexican restaurant. I had the puerco verde, which was pretty good. the salsa was really good also; no metallic taste typical at most Mexican restaurants.

After there several times in the past we decided to go back and to say the least it has really gone down. The chips we were served looked and tasted like they were leftover from the following day and the food was very bland. Not to mention we spent half of the time swapping flies away from our food and drinks. The poor Mexican is truly Poor in service and we will not be returning.

This USED to be my husband and my favorite Mexican restaurant. Yet, each time we went it seemed to get worse. After purchasing some movie tickets, with time to spare, we decided to go here and eat. It took at least 5 minutes for someone to come seat us, which is usually what happens. It took even longer for someone to come take our drink orders, bring chips, and take our food order. Each time it was someone different. When the food came out, they got my mother-in-laws order wrong, which meant she paid more for a meal then she intended. By the time we finished eating we had to wait a ridiculously long time for someone to bring our check, and then we were told to pay up front, and of course no one was there to ring us up. They seemed very under staffed that day, but the experience was so frustrating, that we will all second guess going back.

Fish tacos were great and the crawfish dip was great too! Only complaint was the time between refills of chips. Crawfish dip got cold while waiting on more chips. Food was great though! I'll be back!

Good spicy salsa. Small quesadilla. Salty chimichanga! Good service.

As a native of southern California, I tend to avoid Mexican food in Alabama. I am a bit of purist and I've been disappointed too often. Happily, I was delighted to find the best carne asada tacos I've had since I left Cali at Poor Mexican. It was not crowded (and please, people, go there so it stays open!) and the menu was very reasonably priced. In fact, they had $1.50 draft Stella which made my spouse pretty happy as well. The chips they served with the salsa were fresh. Mr. Wilson had a burrito which looked good, but I didn't bother to try it because did I mention how good the carne asada tacos were? The tacos (4) were served with rice and beans. Again, I didn't waste my time with that. the tacos were stuffed with meat and I could only finish two of them. Do yourselves (and me cause I do not want this place to go away) a favor and go try their carne asada tacos!

I too am from CA, and found this restaurant to be average at best. Weird, sour carne asada, and having my order wrong 2 X before finally getting to eat it. I was not impressed and have not been back. Way to overpriced for the quality you get. And it is fairly cheap food. The salsa was better than other restaurants in the area, but it's not worth sitting thru a whole meal for. I'd come here for beer and appetizers, but that is about it.

Went to Poor Mexican with a friend on a Saturday night, and was surprised at how few people were there. Even with low attendance it took 45 minutes for our food to arrive; all I had was one flauta from the a la carte portion of the menu, which was over-fried to the point of not being able to cut with a knife, and my friend had the fish tacos, which looked fresh and he enjoyed them. The poor waitress came to our table twice before we had food asking us if everything was ok.....what do you say to that? The salsa tasted like canned tomato purée, we didn't even finish one small bowl. I don't know if it was just an off night for them, but judging from other reviews I'm guessing it's normal. We will stick to Don Carlos in the future.

The name says it all. You will be poor when you leave. More expensive than other Mexican restaurants in the area but with lower quality food. The customer service is not good. You have to balance your empty cup on the edge of the table before you get a refill. The salsa is not good. The main dishes aren't as satisfying as most would hope. They have ok ambiance with the fountain in the middle. Just watch out for kids playing in it and splashing old, dirty water on you and your food.

This is definitely not the best Mexican I've ever had, but the decor is really nice and festive. Service was good during lunch. The best part, and the reason I'll probably return, is that they have $1.50 margaritas!! The guacamole was good too. Good location at the mall in Spanish Fort.

You'll likely go poor eating here because they're kind of expensive for a Mexican place, but the food is pretty decent. They've got a decent queso entree that rivals the Ninfa's chain in Houston. If the employees weren't so horrible, I'd go more often.

Sadly, Poor Mexican has gone downhill. Cold beans, cold tacos, and barely any cheese in the cheese enchiladas. I normally go straight to Poor Mexican when I get a sudden craving for Mexican food, but I will definitely steer clear from there for quite awhile.

We stopped here late one weeknight for dinner and the food was delicious! We ordered a variety of things to share and we were super happy! Being Californians stuck in FL where there is no "real" Mexican food to be found, this dinner on our vacation was actually quite fabulous and we were very pleased!

I drove 45 min from Gautier to try it while in the area. It was clean and the staff was great and quick service. We loved the thin, crispy not greasy chips (which they were warmed....nice touch) and flavorful salsa. I had the 2 cheese enchiladas served with rice and beans. It was ok. Bland for my taste. They were still cold in the middle. The others had the chicken and beef tacos....they said they were good. I probably won't go back.

Excellent fish tacos. We traveled 12.5 hours and their chips, salsa and margarita hit the spot! I'd go back

Stopped in one rainy Sunday afternoon with my family of 3. Given that it was located at the Spanish Fort outet mall and the outside was pretty nice, we wanted to give this place a try, but hesitated bringing in a toddler for fear it would be 'too nice' inside. Well stepping inside and being seated, there was no call to worry. The outside almost could be mistaken for maybe a Macaroni Grill (where I wouldn't bring a rowdy toddler), but the inside.... looks like someone owned a sports bar and decided they wanted to run a Mexican restaurant, so they painted the walls with colors from a crayola box, spackled the walls for a 'rustic' look, hung some sombreros, and called it a day. Or called it 'Poor Mexican'. Maybe the name should have clued us in. Ok, so they seat us in a HUGE booth that could have comfortably seated maybe 8 people, even though there was only 3 of us. Normally this would be a ~great~ thing, as I would prefer to be seated beyond the throwing distance of my 2 yr old from other patrons; however the booth seats were well beyond their lifespan and I nearly sank to the floor, while each spring dug into my rear end. Not so comfy! Luckily there were maybe 5 other tables occupied in the entire restaurant on this rainy (seriously, ~pouring) sunday afternoon, and I felt better about my son having 'one of those nights', and didn't feel so bad about his insistence to not sit still and wandering the nearby empty tables. Service was inexplicably slow. Chips were slow, refills slow, orders slow, etc. And the restaurant was maybe 1/3 full. Was our poor server running the whole show? Food arrives and its totally unremarkable run of the mill "mexican". Another thing about the ambiance was there were tvs everywhere, but none of them had sound (anyway later they lost the satellite due to the weather and then nothing was on) and there was no music- though I could hear a little trickling in from the kitchen. We can usually bank on bringing our son to someplace like a mexican restaurant because its usually noisy, so if he makes noise, its not a big deal. Well you can practically hear a pin drop in this place, which only added to my anxiety. I really just wanted to get out of there, but the Eeyore-speed service just added to the madness. Slow service, Weird Ambiance, Boring Food- I don't think we will be back.

Okay food. Drinks are terrible. If you want better margaritas try Don Carlos across the interstate.

4 stars because of the atmosphere and service. Food is average, but fairly priced. Margaritas, amazing. My last visit, I was alone and my server was comical and friendly.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in town. It's fairly standard but I still think it's above and beyond the other Mexican restaurants I have tried in the area.

Was too offended by the terrible, racist name to enter actual establishment. SHAME ON ALL OF YOU.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
